To briefly recap, her husband was pulled over for suspicion of drunken driving and they didn’t call me. Instead Ms. Witherspoon got out of the car to confront the officer, including trying to pull off the “Do you know who I am?” card. It didn’t go well. Ms. Witherspoon went on the morning program to discuss her take-away from the experience.
She has a lot of good things to say. She pointed out that playing a lawyer on TV didnt equate to being a lawyer in real life (see also: playing Trauma Center doesn’t qualify you to perform surgery). She correctly pointed out that if the man with the gun and arrest powers suggests you stay in the car, you probably should. And if I could unpack that it a bit, maybe it’s best to stay quiet when interacting with the police entirely. Also, although unfortunately unsaid, if you think the driver is too drunk to drive call them a cab.
Don’t let Reese Witherspoon’s hard lessons go unacknowledged If you’re dealing with the police, be polite, don’t answer questions, and call a criminal defense lawyer. It’s the best way to stay out of jail (and TMZ).
